African Wildlife Foundation (AWF)

African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) has remained at the forefront of innovative conservation strategies, ensuring the prosperity of wildlife, natural habitats, and local communities throughout Africa. Their unique approach encompasses a comprehensive range of initiatives that not only combat direct threats to wildlife, such as poaching and habitat loss, but also empower communities and governments to take ownership of African conservation efforts. With a commitment to sustainable practices, AWF is leading the way in preserving Africa’s natural heritage for generations to come. Innovative Programs and Initiatives:In the 2020s, AWF continued to expand its impactful programs, demonstrating their unwavering dedication to conservation across Africa. One significant achievement was the inauguration of the Charles R. Wall Conservation Leadership Management Program, a groundbreaking initiative that offers on-the-job experience to mentor the next generation of African conservation leaders. By providing practical training and guidance, this program ensures the continuity of effective conservation practices. In collaboration with the Uganda Wildlife Authority, AWF embarked on a pioneering project to establish three conservancies around Lake Mburo, Murchison Falls, and Kidepo Valley national parks. These conservancies represent Uganda’s first designated areas dedicated to wildlife preservation. By involving local communities in the conservation efforts, AWF aims to create a sustainable model where humans and wildlife can coexist harmoniously. AWF’s commitment to honoring individuals dedicated to biodiversity conservation is exemplified by the launch of the Benjamin Mkapa African Wildlife Photography Awards. This prestigious global award pays tribute to the late Benjamin Mkapa, recognizing his lifelong commitment to preserving Africa’s rich biodiversity. By showcasing the beauty of Africa’s wildlife through the lens of talented photographers, this initiative aims to raise awareness and inspire further conservation efforts. Education and Empowerment:AWF recognizes that conservation efforts must go hand in hand with education and community engagement. In northern Uganda, AWF has opened two new Classroom Africa schools, namely Kidepo and Sarachom primary schools. These schools represent a commitment to rebuilding educational infrastructure in exchange for communities’ dedication to conservation. By providing access to quality education, AWF ensures that future generations understand the importance of protecting Africa’s natural heritage. Strategic Vision and Collaboration:In line with their dedication to African conservation leadership, AWF launched the Strategic Vision 2020-2030. This forward-thinking initiative renews AWF’s commitment to promoting African-led conservation efforts while dispelling the notion of a false choice between nature and development. By integrating sustainable practices into developmental processes, AWF envisions a future where conservation and progress coexist seamlessly. AWF’s impact extends beyond national borders. They have initiated pan-African leadership platforms, connecting civil society organizations and protected-area agencies, and facilitating their participation in global and regional policy processes. AWF’s involvement in conventions and congresses, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity negotiations and the IUCN World Conservation Congress, amplifies African voices on the global stage and ensures that Africa’s unique conservation challenges are addressed effectively. Building Resilience in Challenging Times:In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, AWF recognized the need to support African communities and institutions in overcoming the challenges posed by the crisis. Through collaborative efforts, AWF convened representatives from various sectors, including civil society organizations, protected-area managers, safari operators, and youth conservation leaders. By fostering dialogue and offering support, AWF played a crucial role in building resilience and finding innovative solutions to COVID-related problems across Africa.
