Empowering Women and Communities in Northern Uganda!

African Women Rising (AWR) is a non-profit organization that has dedicated itself to empowering women and communities in the Acholi region of Northern Uganda. The organization is fueled by the hope and opportunity that it finds in the communities it works with, despite the challenges that they face. The Acholi region is still grappling with the legacy of two decades of brutal war that forcibly displaced the entire rural population for years, devastating the local economy. A history of armed conflict has left Northern Uganda with the highest rates of poverty, food insecurity, and illiteracy in the country. ,the region also bears the brunt of Uganda’s refugee crisis, with most of the 1.6 million refugees settling in the rural north, many in the communities where AWR is based. AWR works in 79 villages across the Northern Ugandan districts of Gulu, Lamwo, and Omoro, as well as Lamwo’s Palabek Refugee Settlement. Together, these areas are home to tens of thousands of families who are overcoming a past of war and displacement by actively building a peaceful and prosperous future. The organization focuses on empowering women and communities by providing access to education, economic opportunities, and healthcare. AWR runs various programs such as the Women’s Empowerment Program, the Food Security Program, and the Health Program, which provide training, resources, and support to women and their families. These programs are designed to equip women with the skills and resources they need to become financially independent and self-sufficient, and to contribute to the development of their communities. AWR’s work in Northern Uganda is truly inspiring, and the organization’s commitment to empowering women and communities is evident in everything it does. By providing education, economic opportunities, and healthcare to those in need, AWR is making a real difference in the lives of thousands of people, and helping to build a more peaceful and prosperous future for Northern Uganda.
