Providing Critical HIV/AIDS Services to Uganda’s Most Vulnerable Populations!

For the past two decades, Uganda has been grappling with the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS. In 2020, 5.3% of adults in the country were living with HIV, and new infections among young people aged 15-24 remained a major concern. However, thanks to the efforts of organizations like AHF Uganda Cares, progress has been made in the fight against the disease.AHF Uganda Cares was established in Masaka in 2002, and since then has become one of the largest providers of free HIV/AIDS treatment and care in Uganda. The organization’s model, based on public, civil society, and community participation, has been recognized as a best practice by the World Health Organization and UNAIDS.With 27 districts now covered, including Rakai district where the first incidence of HIV was diagnosed in 1980, AHF Uganda Cares is making a significant impact in the fight against HIV/AIDS.In addition to providing antiretroviral therapy to over 147,250 people countrywide, AHF Uganda Cares also focuses on targeted testing and counselling services for at-risk populations.The organization also distributes free condoms and engages in advocacy activities to promote the right to treatment access and funding for the HIV response. AHF Uganda Cares also supports infrastructure improvement to create a dignified service environment for treating HIV clients.Despite the progress made in recent years, challenges still remain, particularly in the area of donor dependence on HIV funding. AHF Uganda Cares is committed to overcoming these challenges and ensuring that those living with HIV/AIDS have access to the treatment and care they need.With its focus on public, civil society, and community participation, AHF Uganda Cares is providing critical services to Uganda’s most vulnerable populations and making a real difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
