Description

Anaka General Hospital, located in the town of Anaka in Uganda’s Northern Region, has a rich history dating back to the 1960s when it was built during the administration of Prime Minister Milton Obote. However, the hospital has been through some challenging times, particularly during the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency, which left it severely damaged and vandalized.Despite facing dilapidated infrastructure, outdated equipment, and insufficient funding, Anaka General Hospital has continued to serve its community. Although a published report in 2012 revealed that the hospital had gone without a physician or surgeon for several years, the Ministry of Health in Uganda began renovating the hospital in 2014 using a loan from the World Bank. The renovations, which cost UGX:18.65 billion, included a new and expanded outpatients’ department, a mortuary, an enlarged private wing for paying patients, renovated staff housing, a rehabilitated water source, and sewerage disposal system. Additionally, an emergency room (casualty department), a psychiatric department, and an intensive care unit were constructed. With these renovations, Anaka General Hospital is now equipped to provide its patients with quality healthcare services. The hospital’s commitment to serving its community, despite the challenges it has faced, is a testament to the resilience and dedication of its staff. Anaka General Hospital is an essential part of Uganda’s healthcare system and a vital resource for the people of Nwoya District.
