Catholic University of Eastern Africa

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) is a private multi-campus university located in the southwestern neighborhood of Langata, in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Established in 1984 as the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa, under the auspices of the regional ecclesiastical authority Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA), CUEA has grown to become a leading institution of higher learning in Kenya and the wider East African region. CUEA boasts a rich history that dates back to its founding as a graduate school of theology, which was later expanded to include faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Science and Commerce, Law, and a School of Continuing Professional Development. In 2003, the Center for Social Justice and Ethics was established, followed by the opening of satellite campuses in Eldoret and Kisumu in 2009. In 2013, the university opened a new campus in the central business district of Nairobi. One of the standout features of CUEA is its Learning Resource Centre (LRC), which is a model of ecologically sustainable design in the region. Designed by Kenyan architect Musau Kimeu, the LRC consists of three buildings—a modern library, a state-of-the-art auditorium, and a cafeteria—arranged around a central square with outdoor seating. The sustainable design features of the buildings include the use of natural ventilation, high thermal mass, sun-shading of glazed areas, and building orientation, with wind energy utilized in operating the ventilation cowls above the thermal chimneys. The LRC was recognized as the Best Green Building in Kenya in 2014.
