The Congo Nile Trail in western Rwanda offers a unique opportunity for adventure travelers to explore the impressive landscapes of Rwanda while enjoying a range of activities. Although the trail does not visit the Congo or Nile rivers, it offers a chance to hike or cycle through the watershed between them, covering a distance of 227 km.
The trail was launched in 2011 by the Rwanda Development Board/Tourism Department as a new tourism product designed for adventure seekers with the support of the UNWTO, the World Tourism Organization. There are separate routes for hikers and bikers, both following dirt roads and tracks that overlap in many places. Bikers will want to have a terrain bike to navigate the terrain.
The Congo Nile Trail passes through villages where traditional handicrafts like pottery and weaving are important trades. Tourists can also visit tea and coffee plantations and even participate in tours. In addition to these activities, tourists can take boat trips on Lake Kivu, go swimming at the many beaches along the trail, or even join a fishing excursion.
The trail passes by two national parks: Nyungwe Forest National Park and Gishwati-Mukura National Park, which offer opportunities to explore the rainforest and observe endemic species that have developed in the area.
Visitors can fly to Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, and then drive to Gisenyi, Rubavu District, the starting point of the trail, which is 164 km away. Along the trail, there are eight base camps that offer affordable accommodation and food, as well as several other camping and accommodation options.
It is important to note that while staff at hotels can communicate in English, French, or Swahili, people in rural Rwanda typically speak only Kinyarwanda and a few words of other languages. Nonetheless, they are often willing to assist in case of any issues.
In summary, the Congo Nile Trail offers a unique and exciting opportunity to explore Rwanda’s landscapes and culture. With no fees or permits required, tourists can rent a bike or hire a local guide and embark on an adventure that will create memories that last a lifetime.
