Description

CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda;

Located in the eastern district of Mbale; CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda (CCHU) is a specialized children’s neurosurgery hospital owned and administered by CURE International. Opened in 2000, CCHU has been a beacon of hope for children with physical disabilities in Uganda and beyond.At CCHU, children with neurological conditions such as hydrocephalus, neural tube defects, spina bifida, epilepsy, and brain tumors receive world-class medical care. The hospital employs six doctors and 33 nurses who work tirelessly to ensure that each patient receives personalized care and attention.What sets CCHU apart from other hospitals in Uganda is its commitment to serving children with physical disabilities regardless of their ethnic background, religious affiliation, or ability to pay. While the hospital charges a fee for its services, it offers financial assistance to families who cannot afford to pay for treatment.In addition, CCHU is also a teaching center in pediatric neurosurgery for Sub-Saharan Africa. The hospital offers several training programs in collaboration with other stakeholders, including a program for advanced training in hydrocephalus, a comprehensive epilepsy program for Uganda and East Africa, and a pediatric neurosurgical fellowship.CCHU’s program for advanced training in hydrocephalus trains resident doctors in endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV), a procedure for the treatment of hydrocephalus. The hospital provides training and equipment to establish three new ETV centers each year, with iPATH Fellows from various African countries receiving training at CCHU before establishing centers for the surgical treatment of hydrocephalus in their own countries.CCHU’s comprehensive epilepsy program for Uganda and East Africa aims to identify, evaluate, and treat Ugandans with epilepsy, train African physicians in the evaluation and treatment of epilepsy, and conduct research on the causes of epilepsy in Africa and best practices for treatment. The program was established in collaboration with the West Virginia University School of Medicine, and it has already made significant strides in treating epilepsy in the region.
