Daraja Academy is a beacon of hope, an educational institution that believes in the transformative power of education for girls in Kenya. Founded by Jenni and Jason Doherty, this remarkable school aims to bridge the gap between opportunity and disadvantage, empowering young women to shape their lives, families, and communities.Upon their visit to Kenya in 2006, the Dohertys were struck by the profound impact that gender had on educational access. They witnessed firsthand how girls, without a secondary education, faced numerous challenges such as early marriage, limited prospects, and economic vulnerability. It was clear that something needed to be done to break this cycle of inequality.   Driven by their passion for education and social justice, the Dohertys joined forces with Victoria Gichuhi, a seasoned Kenyan educator who now serves as Daraja Academy’s Head of School. Together, they envisioned a boarding school that would not only provide academic excellence but also cater to the physical and personal development of its students.The name “Daraja” was chosen deliberately, symbolizing a bridge that connects these exceptional girls from all corners of Kenya to a brighter future. The school’s mission is simple yet powerful: to offer a fast-track out of poverty through secondary education. By doing so, Daraja Academy empowers young women with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to overcome societal barriers and thrive in a world that often underestimates their potential.   At Daraja Academy, girls receive much more than a traditional education.
