Egerton University: A Trailblazer in Agriculture Education in Kenya

Founded in 1939, Egerton University is the oldest institution of higher learning in Kenya, and it has a rich history that is deeply rooted in agriculture education. The university is located in Njoro, a small community about 25 kilometres southwest of the town of Nakuru, in a serene and picturesque environment that offers a conducive learning atmosphere. Originally named Egerton Farm School, the institution was established by Maurice Egerton, 4th Baron Egerton of Tatton, on a large land grant of 740 acres. The school’s primary objective was to provide agricultural education to white European youth. However, over time, the college transformed and expanded, opening its doors to people of all races from Kenya and other African countries. In 1955, the college changed its name to Egerton Agricultural College and offered a one-year certificate course and a two-year diploma course in agriculture. In 1958, Lord Egerton donated an additional 1,100 acres of land, enabling the college to further expand its programs and offerings. In 1979, with support from the Government of Kenya and USAID, Egerton College became part of the University of Nairobi system, which further expanded its academic programs and research activities. In 1987, the institution was recognized as a chartered public university. Today, Egerton University is a top-ranked university in Kenya and a leading institution of higher learning in East and Central Africa, renowned for its excellence in agriculture education and research. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in various fields, including agriculture, veterinary medicine, engineering, business, education, and social sciences.
