It was not until 1969 that the Vatican knocked on their door, and they hosted the Pope’s delegation for his first-ever visit to Uganda, that the family home was converted into a modest hotel.Fairway Hotel was officially launched in February 1971 by his Highness the Aga Khan with 50 operational rooms, making it one of Uganda’s first hotels. However, during Idi Amin’s regime in 1972, the hotel was taken over by the government during Uganda’s economic war and became an army base. Later on, from 1989 to 1991, it was converted into the country’s first hotel and tourism training institute.The return of the Jaffer family to Uganda in 1990 saw the hotel evolve into a 100-room boutique hotel with conference facilities, top restaurants, pools, and beautiful gardens.
