The Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) was established as a non-governmental organization in Uganda to offer a platform for women’s learning, networking, sharing experiences, and advocating for gender equality and equity in decision-making processes.FOWODE’s beginnings are rooted in the 1994-1995 constitution-making process in Uganda when eight women led the Women’s Caucus in the Constituent Assembly, resulting in landmark provisions to guarantee women’s rights and gender equality.FOWODE has strategically positioned itself as a champion for women’s rights protection, participation in political decision-making, and engaging in issues of macroeconomic governance such as Gender Responsive Budgeting (GRB).FOWODE’s efforts are grounded in the Ugandan and African women’s rights movements, pursuing a non-partisan path and focusing its efforts on building transformative leadership for women’s rights and influencing public policy.FOWODE primarily focuses on women’s issues, but it also seeks gender equality and involves men in all aspects of its work. FOWODE’s advocacy and transformative leadership have influenced public policy, leading to significant strides in gender equality and women’s empowerment.The organization’s dedication to women’s rights and gender equality has led to Uganda’s Constitution being recognized as one of the most gender-sensitive in the world.Through its relentless pursuit of a non-partisan path, FOWODE continues to be a pacesetter in promoting gender equality and women’s leadership in the country.Its efforts have positioned it as a key player in advocating for women’s rights protection, participation in political decision-making, and engagement in macroeconomic governance. With its continued focus on women’s rights and gender equality, FOWODE is a driving force for positive change in Uganda and beyond.
