Giakanja Boys High School.

Giakanja Boys High School stands as a testament to the power of education and the pursuit of excellence. With a rich history spanning over six decades, this Extra-County Boys Boarding High School has left an indelible mark on the lives of countless students who have passed through its doors. The origins of Giakanja Boys High School can be traced back to the year 1962 when it was founded with the support of the American Aid Programme. The school’s establishment was a symbol of the enduring friendship between the United States and Kenya, as it embodied the sincere desire of the American people to assist in the development of education in Kenya. Under the distinguished patronage of Mr. G. MENNEN WILLIAMS, the then U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, the inaugural ceremony took place on the 9th of May, 1962. In its early days, Giakanja Boys High School started humbly with just one classroom and an office. It welcomed its first cohort of nine boys, functioning as a day school exclusively for male students. Mr. Walter M. Ndegwa, the founding principal, provided strong leadership and laid the foundation for the school’s future success.A significant turning point came in 1977 when Giakanja Boys High School opened its doors to female students, marking the beginning of a co-educational era. The school underwent a transformation, becoming a mixed/day/boarding secondary school. During this period, the student population flourished, and enrollment reached an impressive 800 students. The inclusion of girls in the educational ecosystem fostered an environment of diversity and expanded opportunities for academic and personal growth. In the spirit of continuous improvement, the school made a strategic decision in 1993 to phase out the admission of girls gradually. Over a span of four years, Giakanja Boys High School transitioned into a boys-only institution. This change allowed the school to redefine its educational approach, focusing on the unique needs and aspirations of young men, while still upholding the principles of equality and inclusivity.Further enhancing its commitment to excellence, Giakanja Boys High School phased out day schooling in 1995, evolving into a fully-fledged boys boarding school. This transformation enabled the school to provide an immersive educational experience, nurturing an environment of camaraderie and intellectual growth. Throughout its journey, Giakanja Boys High School has continually invested in its infrastructure, ensuring that students have access to modern facilities conducive to learning. From 1978 to 2022, the school witnessed remarkable growth and development in its physical infrastructure, providing students with state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and recreational spaces. These enhancements have augmented the learning environment and empowered students to realize their full potential. Giakanja Boys High School remains dedicated to its mission of academic excellence, character development, and holistic education. With a team of passionate educators, a supportive community, and a proud alumni network, the school continues to shape the future leaders of East and Central Africa.
