Advancing Understanding of Migration Issues!

Migration is inevitable in the 21st century, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) recognizes that it is necessary for economies and societies to flourish. IOM works with its partners in the international community to advance understanding of migration issues and encourage social and economic development through migration.One of IOM’s key objectives is to promote the link between migration and economic, social, and cultural development. The organization recognizes that migration policies must be responsible and humane to ensure that the benefits of migration are maximized while minimizing its negative impacts.With 166 member states and eight countries holding observer status, IOM is a global advocate for safe, orderly, and regular migration. Its programmatic interventions include promoting international migration law, policy debate, and guidance, as well as protecting migrants’ rights, migration health, and the gender dimension of migration.In Uganda, IOM has been supporting the government since 1988 in addressing migration challenges and building the capacity of relevant stakeholders. Its field sub-offices in Nakivale, Kyangwali, Kyaka II, Moroto, Moyo, and Yumbe, are at the forefront of responding to migration dimensions of humanitarian crises.IOM implements a range of programmatic interventions in areas such as Refugee Resettlement, Emergency Preparedness and Response, Labour Migration and Human Development, Migrant Protection and Assistance, Transition and Recovery, Immigration and Border Management, and Migration Environment and Climate Change.By advancing understanding of migration issues and promoting responsible and humane migration policies, IOM is helping to ensure that migration benefits both migrants and society in general.
