Jinja Regional Referral Hospital:

Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, also known as Jinja Hospital, is a shining example of medical excellence in the Eastern Region of Uganda. The hospital boasts a bed capacity of 600, making it the largest hospital in the region. However, due to the high demand for medical services in the area, the hospital often admits many more patients than it can accommodate, with some patients even sleeping on the floor. Located in the heart of Jinja, not far from the Source of the Nile, Jinja Hospital serves as the Regional Referral Hospital for the districts of Bugiri, Iganga, Jinja, Kaliro, Kamuli, Luuka, Mayuge, Namayingo, Kayunga, and parts of Buikwe. It is approximately 84 kilometres east of Mulago National Referral Hospital, and the hospital’s coordinates are 00°25’52.0″N, 33°12’18.0″E. Jinja Hospital is one of thirteen Regional Referral Hospitals in Uganda and is designated as an Internship Hospital. This means that graduates of Ugandan medical schools may undergo a year of internship under the supervision of consultants and specialists in designated medical and surgical disciplines. The hospital has undergone major renovations in recent years, thanks to government funds for capital development. In July 2009, a new 20-bed intensive care unit (ICU) was commissioned, with construction funds donated by The Rotary Club of Jinja in District 9200, The Rotary Club of Eugene, Oregon, United States in District 5110, and the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development. The life-sustaining equipment in the ICU was donated by Assist International, a California-based NGO, and General Electric, an American conglomerate that manufactures high-tech medical equipment among other precision instruments. Despite the challenges it faces, Jinja Regional Referral Hospital remains a beacon of hope for the people of Eastern Uganda. The hospital’s dedication to providing high-quality medical care to the community is truly commendable.
