Kagando Hospital

Kagando Hospital, also known as Kagando Mission Hospital, is a rural community hospital located in Kagando Village, Kasese District, Rwenzururu sub-region in the Western Region of Uganda. Established in 1965 by the African Inland Missionaries, the hospital has since become a beacon of hope for the surrounding communities.Owned and administered by Kagando Rural Development Center (KARUDEC), a Christian missionary NGO affiliated with the Church of Uganda, Kagando Hospital provides high-quality medical care to the people in the area. The hospital has 250 beds and receives about 20,000 annual outpatient visits and about 18,000 annual inpatient admissions.Kagando Hospital is renowned for its specialty wards, which include the Pediatric Ward, Male Medical Ward, Female Medical Ward, Male Surgical Ward, Female Surgical Ward, Maternity Ward, Leprosy Ward, Tuberculosis Ward, and Neonatal Unit. The hospital’s professional staff, which includes 2 surgeons, 2 physicians, one anesthesiologist, one physiotherapist, and a number of nurses and midwives, ensures that patients receive the best possible care. One of the hospital’s unique features is the daily service held at the KARUDEC Chapel every morning at 8 am, which brings together doctors, nurses, nursing students, and medical students to pray for the hospital’s patients and local issues before commencing their work for the day.Kagando Hospital is also a favorite choice for medical students in Ugandan medical schools and foreign medical students who may volunteer to spend their elective (part of their training which involves work overseas) at Kagando. The hospital has established outreach programs, including the Kagando School of Nursing and Midwifery, which was established in 1965 to respond to the shortage of nurses and midwives in the community. Today, student capacity is nearly 250 students. The hospital also runs a community-based healthcare project that is involved in malaria control, water supply, and sanitation in response to the severe cholera outbreak in 1978. Furthermore, the hospital has an agriculture extension program that includes a KARUDEC Farm on the 35 acres (14 ha) campus, a Microfinance program, a kindergarten and elementary school with nearly 700 pupils, and a functional Adult Literacy Program. In April 2018, Kagando Hospital adopted Stre@mline Health for the management of its hospital processes, making it one of the hospitals in Africa that has taken advantage of the Electronic Medical Records system. The hospital is also looking forward to adopting the insurance model that is built into Stre@mline Health, which will help very poor communities access high-quality healthcare. With its unique outreach programs and innovative medical processes, the hospital is making a significant impact in the area, giving hope to the people who rely on it for their healthcare needs.
