With its origins dating back to 1910 as the Nairobi European School, this esteemed institution has evolved into a beacon of academic excellence within East and Central Africa.The school’s journey began in humble surroundings, with the Nairobi European School functioning as a co-educational institution housed in police Barracks. However, recognizing the need for specialized education, the school underwent transformative changes over the years. In 1931, the boys and girls were separated, leading to the renaming of the institution as The European Girls Secondary School in 1935. The pioneering Miss Kerby was appointed as the school’s first Headmistress, laying the foundation for the school’s remarkable growth. During its early years, the school faced challenges posed by overcrowding and outdated facilities. However, the vision for a modern and spacious institution persisted. In 1944, the present-day site spanning approximately 100 acres on Kileleshwa Hill received approval, and funds were allocated in the 1945 budget for the development of the grounds. The construction process was not without financial hurdles, but the school’s determination prevailed, and by 1950, the partially completed new school welcomed 100 boarders into its two boarding blocks.As time passed, the school continued to transform, embracing the need for additional facilities to enhance the educational experience. The completion of the swimming pool in December 1952, made possible with a government loan, provided students with a venue for recreation and physical development. The subsequent dedication of the Chapel in 1959 and the opening of the library in 1963 further enriched the academic environment. Under the guidance of Miss Leeves, the school witnessed a significant milestone in its history—the admission of the first African and Asian girls in the early 1960s. This marked the beginning of a diverse and inclusive student body, fostering a vibrant inter-racial community.
