Kianda School stands as a beacon of Christian-based, holistic education for girls. With a mission to positively influence and serve society, and a vision to develop innovative leaders who provide and share solutions for a better world, Kianda School has been shaping the minds and characters of young girls for over four decades.
At Kianda School, the values of RISE with FREEDOM guide every aspect of education and student life. RISE stands for Responsibility, Integrity, Service, and Excellence, while FREEDOM represents the freedom to grow, explore, and reach one’s full potential.
Responsibility is ingrained in every student as they learn to take charge and commit to their duties, while also owning up to their decisions. Integrity is fostered through a culture of honesty, faithfulness, and moral uprightness. Students are encouraged to be empathetic and go out of their way to help others, embodying the value of service. And finally, excellence is pursued in all endeavors, instilling a passion for knowledge, skills, and personal growth.
The roots of Kianda School trace back to the Kianda Foundation, which responded to the requests of past students of Kianda College—the first multiracial college in Africa. Inspired by the desire to provide the same personalized attention and quality education experienced at the college, Kianda School was established in 1977.
Under the leadership of Miss Mary Kibera, the first Headmistress, Kianda School welcomed its inaugural class of 40 form one students on 9th January 1977. Among those students was Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta, who would go on to become the First Lady of Kenya. Over the years, the school has grown significantly and currently educates approximately 900 students.
Kianda School holds a special place in history as it witnessed the arrival of the first group of Standard Ones in 1989. The vibrant energy of these young learners skipping and chirping with great zest for life encapsulates the spirit of Kianda School—a place where education and joy intertwine to create a nurturing environment for growth.
In 1989, Kianda College merged with Strathmore College, prompting a move to new premises. However, Kianda School remained steadfast, carrying forward its legacy of empowering girls through education on its present site.
As a testament to its commitment to academic excellence and holistic development, Kianda School continues to provide a platform for girls to thrive. It equips them with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become leaders and change-makers in their communities and beyond.
At Kianda School, each girl is encouraged to embrace her potential, fostering a sense of purpose and igniting a passion for lifelong learning. Through a rich curriculum, diverse extracurricular activities, and a supportive community, Kianda School shapes the minds, character, and dreams of its students.
