Kisiizi Hospital is a community hospital located in the town of Kisiizi, Rukungiri District, in the Western Region of Uganda. Founded in 1958 by missionary John Sharp and later taken over by the North Kigezi Diocese of the Church of Uganda, the hospital is affiliated with the Anglican Church of Uganda.
With a bed capacity of 250 plus 10 cots/incubators in the Special Care Baby Unit, Kisiizi Hospital is a fee-paying hospital. However, the hospital is committed to providing care to all, regardless of their ability to pay. To supplement the income from patient fees, the hospital operates several other businesses, including the Kisiizi Hospital Power Station, a hydroelectric project that supplies the hospital and affiliated subsidiary institutions. The surplus power is sold to the community, including businesses and residences.
In addition to the hospital’s medical services, Kisiizi Hospital also offers a range of educational and social services to the community. The hospital owns Kisiizi Hospital Primary School, a mixed day and boarding primary school with 403 students and 13 teachers, as well as the Kisiizi Hospital School of Nursing, which trains nurses and midwives and has a total enrollment of 200 students.
Kisiizi Hospital is also affiliated with the Kisiizi Hospital Health Insurance Scheme, which operates in conjunction with Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (Saccos) in the community. The scheme protects patients from financial ruin from routine illnesses and ensures that the hospital is paid for their services. As of 2017, the scheme had 38,400 enrollees.
Overall, Kisiizi Hospital’s holistic approach to healthcare is a model for other hospitals and healthcare facilities. By providing not only medical care but also education and social services, Kisiizi Hospital is making a positive impact on the health and well-being of the community it serves.
