Meanwhile, the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK) and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE) each have their own storied histories. ITEK began as a government teacher training college in 1948 before becoming a national teachers’ college and then, by statute of parliament in 1989, ITEK. UNISE, on the other hand, was affiliated with the Department of Special Education at Makerere University before becoming an autonomous institution by Act of Parliament in 1998.
