Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is a true gem of the Rift Valley, located at an elevation of 1,754 m (5,755 ft) above sea level, just to the south of Nakuru town. The park is renowned for its spectacular lake that once used to be an oasis for millions of flamingos, turning the shoreline into a vibrant shade of pink. Nowadays, although the flamingo population has decreased, the lake still attracts a vast array of birdlife, as well as large mammals such as warthogs, baboons, and rhinos. The park is a protected area that has seen significant changes over the years. In the early 1990s, the lake’s water level dropped, and the flamingos had to migrate to Lake Bogoria in search of food. However, in 2013, there was an alarming increase in the water levels, leading to flooding in parts of Nakuru town and the national park, forcing over 600 households to relocate.Despite these challenges, the park has continued to thrive, and it’s now home to an impressive population of rhinos, including eastern black rhinos and southern white rhinos, which have been introduced for conservation purposes. The park’s wildlife population has also grown to include lions, cheetahs, leopards, and other large mammals, thanks to the recent expansion of the park’s boundaries.Visitors to the park can witness a spectacle of nature with the millions of birds that call the lake home, including flamingos, African fish eagles, and Verreaux’s eagles. The best vantage point to take in the sights and sounds of the park is from Baboon Cliff, which offers a panoramic view of the lake and the surrounding savannahs. It’s worth noting that Lake Nakuru National Park is protected under the Ramsar Convention on wetlands, making it an essential area for biodiversity conservation. In addition, the park’s fenced-off area of 188 km (116 mi) serves as a sanctuary for giraffes, as well as both black and white rhinos.Lake Nakuru National Park is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts, offering a unique and memorable experience of Africa’s wildlife and breathtaking landscapes.
