Lukenya University: Where Learning and Community Meet

In the heart of Makueni County, Kenya, lies Lukenya University – a testament to the perseverance of its founders and a beacon of hope for the local community. The late Honourable Rtd Justice Kasanga Mulwa and his wife Martha Kasanga Mulwa started with a primary school on their cattle farm in 1991. Today, Lukenya University is a fully-fledged private university offering a diverse range of programmes. As a residential university, Lukenya provides students with a unique and intentional learning environment that fosters a strong sense of community. The university is built along the banks of the Athi River/Galana River, neighbouring the world-famous Tsavo East National Park, offering a wholesome learning experience for both students and faculty. The university’s flagship programme is the B.Sc. Dryland Agriculture, which focuses on the unique economic needs of Kenya’s arid and semi-arid regions. Lukenya also offers other dryland-focused programmes in addition to a variety of academic programmes for the 21st Century learner. Lukenya’s trimester system of teaching and learning provides students with a flexible approach to completing their studies. The university also offers programmes in postgraduate, undergraduate, diploma, and certificate levels at its main campus and through online learning. Its founders strongly believed in giving back to the community by establishing a centre of learning and research. With a strong foundation laid by its first vice chancellor, Prof Nyaigotti Chacha, Lukenya University is now a fully-fledged university with four schools and twenty-three programmes as of 2021.
