Nestled along the Dawa River on the Kenya-Ethiopia border, Malka Mari National Park is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Though it may be the least visited national park in Kenya, its 1,500 square kilometres of semi-arid bushland and scrubby grassland make for a unique and unforgettable adventure.
One of the park’s most fascinating features is its riparian woodland that lines the Dawa River. It is home to a variety of plants that are unique to the area and offer a glimpse into the biodiversity of the region. These plants thrive in the semi-arid conditions of the park, and their resilience is a testament to the beauty of nature.
In addition to the plants, the park is home to a plethora of animals. Visitors can spot Somali giraffes gracefully wandering the grassy plains, while crocodiles silently bask in the sun near the riverbank. The park is also home to hyenas, agama lizards, antelopes, vultures, dik-diks, zebras, genets, and Nile crocodiles. It’s truly a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise.
Bird lovers will also be thrilled with the over 20 species of birds that call Malka Mari National Park home. The streptopelia decipiens, cichladusa guttata, ploceus dichrocephalus, and the rare desert crow, corvus ruficollis, are just some of the birds that can be seen in the park. With their vibrant colours and beautiful songs, these birds add a touch of magic to the already stunning landscape.
Designated an IUCN Category II park in 1989, Malka Mari National Park is a testament to Kenya’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage. Despite being the least visited national park in the nation, it is a must-see for anyone looking for an authentic African wilderness experience. Accessible via the Mandera Airport, this unspoiled gem is waiting to be explored.
