Mama Ngina Girls High School stands as a beacon of educational inspiration in Mombasa, Kenya. With a motto that resonates deeply, “Education is Inspiration,” this esteemed institution has been transforming young lives since its establishment on January 25th, 1988.
From its humble beginnings as a public double-streamed boarding secondary school for girls, Mama Ngina Girls High School has flourished over the years. It embarked on its journey with a modest intake of 80 students, utilizing the facilities of the former Mama Ngina Hostel, which had experienced a decline in occupancy due to the transition to the 8-4-4 education system. The school’s mandate was to admit 85% of its students from their home districts, aligning with the government’s directives.
Throughout its history, Mama Ngina Girls High School has been graced with exceptional leadership. Five Principals have guided the institution, each contributing to its growth and success. From the pioneering Mrs. Lucy Mwawasi to the current Principal, Mrs. Omar M., the school has witnessed a lineage of visionary leaders who have nurtured a culture of excellence.Academic performance stands as a testament to the school’s commitment to educational excellence. Through the concerted efforts of dedicated teachers, students, non-teaching staff, the Board of Management, and the Parents’ Association, Mama Ngina Girls High School has consistently achieved outstanding results in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.Beyond the confines of the classroom, the school places great emphasis on co-curricular activities, recognizing their role in shaping well-rounded individuals. Despite space limitations, Mama Ngina Girls High School has excelled in athletics, cross-country, and the performing arts. The school has acquired the KPA Mbaraki sports ground to provide students with ample opportunities to showcase their athletic prowess. Moreover, the students have made their mark in national drama and music festivals, exhibiting their artistic talents.
To foster personal growth and character development, the school offers a diverse range of clubs and societies. Committed teachers oversee various clubs such as the Wildlife club, Red Cross, Ranger Guides, Cookery club, Mathematics club, Science club, and Youth Promoters, to name a few. Additionally, the Christian Union, Muslim Union, and Young Christian Society provide spiritual support, catering to the diverse religious backgrounds of the students.Mama Ngina Girls High School’s physical facilities reflect its progressive outlook. Inheriting three dormitories and four staff houses from the Mama Ngina Hostel, the school has converted its dining hall into makeshift classrooms to accommodate the growing student population. Over time, additional classrooms have been constructed, totaling 16 classrooms, including eight optional ones. Laboratories, a home science room, a library, and a teacher’s staff room/computer lab have been established to enhance the learning environment. However, the school faces various challenges that hinder its progress. Teacher shortage, limited space for expansion, inadequate playing fields, insufficient school furniture, ill-equipped computer facilities, underdeveloped library and laboratories, an aging school bus, and fee payment issues demand attention. Nevertheless, Mama Ngina Girls High School remains resolute in its pursuit of addressing these challenges and ensuring a conducive learning environment for its students.
Searching toward the future, the school endeavors to acquire additional land within Mombasa County with the support of local leadership. This expansion aims to cater to the growing demand for education and provide space for staff houses and sports fields, fostering holistic development among the students.
