Mbale Regional Cancer Centre: Providing Hope and Relief to Cancer Patients in UgandaCancer is a dreaded disease that affects millions of people worldwide. In Uganda, the burden of cancer patients has been increasing over the years, with many of them seeking treatment at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala. However, the establishment of regional cancer centers, such as the Mbale Regional Cancer Centre (MbRCC), is changing the narrative.MbRCC, a public, specialized, tertiary care medical facility owned by the Uganda Ministry of Health, is located on the campus of Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, in the heart of the city of Mbale, Eastern Uganda. The center, which became functional in the 2019/2020 financial year, is a cancer treatment, research, and teaching center affiliated with the Busitema University School of Medicine.MbRCC was established to relieve the burden of cancer patients at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala. With 4,500 to 6,000 new patients registering at the Institute annually, the need for regional cancer centers cannot be overstated. MbRCC, along with other regional cancer centers in Arua, Gulu, and Mbarara, is playing a vital role in providing oncology care to cancer patients in Uganda.Collaboration is key in the provision of quality oncology care. MbRCC works in collaboration with the Uganda Cancer Institute, which is undergoing transformation into the East African Cancer Centre of Excellence. The UCI specialists work with the staff at MbRCC to provide the necessary oncology care to patients.The establishment of MbRCC has provided hope and relief to cancer patients in Eastern Uganda. The center’s location, on the campus of Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, makes it easily accessible to patients from the surrounding regions. MbRCC is well-equipped with modern facilities and technology, making it a world-class cancer center.
