Mbarara Airport:

Your Gateway to the Heart of Ankole Sub-Region, Uganda

Mbarara Airport, also known as Nyakisharara Airport, is a small but essential airport serving the town of Mbarara in the Ankole sub-region of Uganda. It is one of 12 upcountry airports administered by the Civil Aviation Authority of Uganda. This airport is a gateway for visitors to the region, providing convenient access to various attractions such as Lake Mburo National Park and the Igongo Cultural Centre. Located approximately 9 kilometers north-west of Mbarara, the airport is easily accessible by road. The runway length includes gravelled overruns of 190 and 85 meters on the east and west ends respectively, and its orientation is 11/29. The airport’s runway measures 1500 meters in length, 30 meters in width, and its surface is made up of murram. At an altitude of 4600 feet above sea level, the airport offers a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape. The airport is equipped with various terminal services, including check-in and baggage handling. Though not equipped with air navigational services, the airport has a windsock to aid in landing and takeoff procedures. Additionally, the airport has aviation security and aviation police for added safety and security. Unfortunately, the airport does not offer fuel, immigration, or customs services, but there are accommodation and hotel options available in Mbarara town. If you’re looking to explore the Ankole sub-region of Uganda, Mbarara Airport is an excellent starting point. It may be a small airport, but it provides a critical gateway to some of Uganda’s most beautiful destinations.
