Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS) is an autonomous institute of higher learning that was set up with a mission to transform health service delivery through training and education.
Since its inception in 1998 as a directorate under Mildmay Uganda, MIHS has been operating as a faith-based National Non-Governmental Organisation (NNGO) recognized as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) by the Government of Uganda, Ministry of Health.
MIHS’s commitment to quality education is evident from the accreditation it received from the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) in 2009. With a focus on capacity building through short courses in HIV&AIDS care, treatment and support, MIHS runs three schools/departments; Nursing and Paramedical schools, other Academic Programmes, and Short Courses and Consultancies.
What sets MIHS apart is its 30-year master plan, which has been heavily informed by benchmarks from other institutions around the globe, such as the University of Manchester and the Uganda Christian University, among others. With a core mission of being ‘A leader in health professional development, based on a Christian foundation,’ MIHS embraces the MUg leadership philosophy.
MIHS’s strategic plan provides a framework within which it will contribute to the government and other stakeholders’ efforts to address critical gaps in human resources for health systems in Uganda and the region.
As the country focuses on achieving a high-quality standard of living through improving the quality of its population, health and nutrition status, literacy and numeracy, housing, water and sanitation conditions, and provision of social protection for the citizenry, MIHS will play a crucial role in training and educating health professionals to meet the country’s health needs.
MIHS’s commitment to addressing the health system’s challenges is commendable, given the burden posed by low life expectancy, maternal mortality ratio, and poor health service delivery. The inadequate health worker mix further compounds these challenges. With a health workers to patient ratio that’s still a cause for concern, MIHS’s contribution to the health training and education sub-sector is vital.
In conclusion, MIHS’s commitment to quality education, faith-based approach, and strategic planning informed by benchmarks from other institutions globally, places it at the forefront of health professional development in Uganda. MIHS is an institution that’s worth considering for anyone seeking quality training and education in the health sector.
