Moi University: A Pioneer in Higher Education in Kenya
Moi University, located in Kesses, Eldoret town, Uasin Gishu county, is a public university established in 1984 under the Moi University Act of the Parliament of Kenya. Named after the second President of Kenya, Daniel arap Moi, the university was founded on the recommendations of the McKay Commission.
The university has come a long way since its inception, starting with only one department, the Department of Forestry, and 83 students. Today, it boasts of multiple schools and institutes, including the College of Health Sciences, School of Agriculture and Natural Resources, School of Business and Economics, School of Medicine, and School of Law, among others. The university has also expanded to other locations, including a Nairobi campus and a Coast campus.
Moi University is known for its emphasis on science and technology, as evidenced by the School of Aerospace Science, the Institute of Biomedical Informatics, and the School of Engineering, among others. The university also has a strong focus on health, with schools such as the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing.
In 1996, Moi University made history by establishing the second school of medicine in Kenya. However, the university also faced tragedy in 2015 when the Garissa University College attack occurred at its Garissa campus. The attack claimed the lives of 142 students, who were identified as Christians.
Despite the challenges, Moi University has continued to thrive and has even adopted a mascot, the Nandi bear, chosen by the School of Engineering students. The university’s vibrant student life is reflected in the numerous clubs and societies, including the student radio station, 103.9MUFM, and the Moi University Students Organisation (MUSO), which serves the student community in pursuit of academic and social welfare.
Moi University is a pioneer in higher education in Kenya, and its commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and innovation has earned it a place among the best universities in East and Central Africa. With its diverse schools and institutes, as well as its vibrant student life, Moi University remains a top choice for students seeking higher education in Kenya.
