Mount Kenya University

Mount Kenya University (MKU) is a premier private university that has grown to become one of the largest institutions of higher learning in Kenya. Established in 1996 by the visionary founder, Prof. Simon N. Gicharu, the university has come a long way to become a multi-campus university with over 52,000 students enrolled in various programs.The university’s main campus is located in Thika, a town approximately 47 kilometers northeast of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. MKU has also established other campuses in various parts of Kenya, including Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret, Meru, and Kigali, Rwanda. The university also has an Open Distance and Electronic Learning (ODEL) Center at the main campus.Over the years, MKU has maintained a reputation for providing quality education to students. The university’s faculties include Business and Economics, Education, Law, Health Sciences, and Pure and Applied Sciences. The institution is ISO 9001:2015 certified, and its commitment to providing quality education has earned it a charter from the government of Kenya.The history of Mount Kenya University is one of excellence and determination. It started as Thika Institute of Technology in 1996, providing programs in management and computer training. In the same year, the institute was fully registered as an institution of higher learning by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology Kenya. In 2005, the institute became the first privately-owned institution in Kenya to receive authorization from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of the Kenya Ministry of Health to provide training to pharmaceutical technologists.In 2006, the Commission for Higher Education (CHE) approved the institute’s request for collaboration with JKUAT to offer both diploma and degree programs. After fulfilling all the requirements, the Commission for Higher Education issued MKU with the authority to establish a full-fledged privately funded university. In 2011, the university was awarded a charter by the government of Kenya, upon the recommendation of the Commission of Higher Education.Overall, Mount Kenya University is an excellent institution that offers quality education to its students.
