Multimedia University of Kenya: A Premier Institution for Innovative Education
The Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) is a public institution located in Nairobi, Kenya, that offers a diverse range of IT and related courses, mass media, business, engineering, and social sciences education. With a history dating back to 1948, MMU has become a well-established institution that is known for its innovative approach to education.
One of the university’s standout features is its two campuses. The main campus is located near the western side of the Nairobi National Park and is home to the telecommunications museum and several residential halls. The second campus is situated in the Nairobi Central Business District, making it easily accessible for students and faculty.
MMU’s history is one of transformation and evolution. The university began as the Central Training School in 1948, serving as the East African Post Training School. It later became the Kenya Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (KPTC) and then the Kenya College of Communications Technology under KPTC. In 1999, it became a subsidiary of Telkom Kenya Ltd (TKL), and after the privatization of TKL in 2006, it became a subsidiary of Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK). In 2008, it was upgraded to Multimedia University College of Kenya and became a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
In 2013, the university was granted a university charter by the Kenyan government, giving it university status. MMU offers a variety of certificate, diploma, bachelor’s, and master’s degree courses through its six faculties, which include Engineering and Technology, Computing and Information Technology, Media and Communication, Business and Economics, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences and Technology.
The MMU academic calendar operates on two semesters that run from January to April and September to December. The university also offers short courses through its Centre for Further Education to complement the academic programs being offered and provide students with additional training.
The university library is a comprehensive collection that covers all programs offered by the university. The library offers training on accessing e-resources in the e-resources centre located within the library. The MMU library contains four sections: circulation services, technical services, collection development, and e-resources centre.
One unique feature of MMU is its ICT museum, the largest in East and Central Africa. The museum is open to the public and showcases the evolution of information and communication technology over the years.
MMU is involved in the development of Konza Technology City and has adopted a similar strategy as MMU Malaysia in accelerating the development of Kenya’s Information and Knowledge sectors. This is one of the pillars meant to transform Kenya to a middle-income economy under Vision 2030.
In 2012, MMU was recognized as the top-ranking public university in Kenya in ICT excellence. It is also the training centre for the SAP Skills for Africa Program, which aims to train African university graduates in software engineering.
Overall, the Multimedia University of Kenya is a premier institution for innovative education, offering a range of courses and programs that cater to the changing needs of the industry. With its commitment to excellence and forward-thinking approach, MMU is set to continue making significant contributions to the education sector in Kenya and beyond.
