The Nairobi Railway Museum is a unique and captivating tourist attraction in the bustling city of Nairobi, Kenya. Adjacent to the Nairobi railway station, this railway museum has an impressive collection of exhibits from the East African Railways, which was defunct. The museum was opened in 1971 by the East African Railways and Harbours Corporation and is now operated by Kenya Railways.
One of the most fascinating aspects of this museum is its maintenance of a rail connection, which allows for the efficient movement of museum exhibits for maintenance and the placement of items in the collection. Within the main railway works, visitors can find three operational steam locomotives stored securely under cover. However, viewing of these locomotives requires an appointment. Despite their not being used for several years, these locomotives remain in excellent condition and are a testament to the engineering prowess of the time they were built.
One of the notable display locomotives, the 301 (2301), was used in the 1985 movie, Out of Africa. It’s not just steam locomotives that make up the museum’s collection; it also has early diesel locomotives and passenger coaches. The collection has been assisted by Friends of the Railway Museum East Africa (FORM East Africa), a group of Railway and Locomotive enthusiasts who have played a significant role in sourcing and securing artifacts for the museum.
To further enhance the activity at the museum, a working miniature railway was installed in January 2011. This miniature train, formerly used to promote Kenya Railways (KR) on exhibitions such as the Nairobi Show, consists of a locomotive with a petrol-engine, and several coaches made of wood. The miniature railway is an excellent way to experience the charm and history of trains in a fun and engaging way.
In conclusion, the Nairobi Railway Museum is a fascinating and unique tourist destination, showcasing the rich history of railway transport in East Africa. With its impressive collection of locomotives, coaches, and other artifacts, visitors are sure to learn and appreciate the importance of railways in the region’s development. The museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of transportation, railway enthusiasts, and anyone looking for an educational and fun experience in Nairobi.
