Located in Njeru, Buikwe District, just east of Kampala, the National Defence College is a premier institution for National Security and Strategic Studies training and education in Uganda. The college is an institute of excellence for defence, security, and national development, with a mission to produce graduates in strategic leadership to advise government on national and international security matters. Established in 2019 under the leadership of Lieutenant General Nakibus Lakara, with the support of the Ugandan Chief of Defence Forces, General David Muhoozi, the college aims to offer top-notch training to civilians, military, national security professionals, and future leaders. The courses offered include a Postgraduate Diploma in National Security Studies and a Masters in Security Strategy, offered in collaboration with Uganda’s oldest and largest public university, Makerere University. Graduates from the college receive a National Defence Collège badge and a master’s degree from Makerere University. The National Defence College admitted its first cohort of students in January 2022, including some of the country’s top military and government officials. Among the pioneer class are Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso, previously spokesperson for the UPDF, Colonel Edith Nakalema, previously Head of State House Anti-Corruption Unit, and Brigadier Peter Candia, previously Commander of the Special Forces Command. The pioneer class comprises 20 students, including 18 UPDF officers, and is a testament to the quality of education offered by the college.
