A Legacy of Conservation in East Africa!

NatureUganda (NU) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of birds and their habitats in Uganda. It was established in the early 1990s by a group of lecturers at Makerere University who were passionate about nature walks and bird watching.Since then, the organization has grown to become the leading membership-based conservation organization in Uganda, championing the protection of birds and their habitats.NU is part of the East Africa Natural History Society (EANHS), which was established in 1909, making it the oldest conservation organization in East Africa. The society’s primary aim was to document the diversity of wildlife in East Africa. Its members used to collect specimens from the wild during their expeditions, which were deposited into a collection centre that later grew to become the present National Museums of Kenya. In Uganda, the EANHS activities were halted due to political turmoil in the 1970s, but they were revitalized when the NRM government took power in 1986. A few of the surviving members restarted the EANHS-Uganda branch with a few activities mainly bird watching and nature walks.By 1994, EANHS-Uganda had attracted more members and engaged in other activities including scientific research, conservation action, public awareness raising, advocacy and research. In 1995, NU was registered as a non-profit independent national organization, with the aim of streamlining operations and expanding its activities. During the same period, NU joined the BirdLife International partnership and became the BirdLife partner in Uganda.Since then, NU has continued to play a vital role in the conservation of birds and their habitats, working closely with other organizations to achieve its objectives.NU’s success can be attributed to its membership-based approach, which allows it to draw on the expertise and resources of its members to achieve its goals. The organization’s activities include scientific research, conservation action, public awareness raising, advocacy, and research. It has also developed strong partnerships with other organizations, which have helped to expand its reach and impact.NU’s commitment to the protection of birds and their habitats has earned it recognition both locally and internationally. The organization has received numerous awards for its work, including the prestigious BirdLife International Conservation Award in 2014.NU is a beacon of hope for conservation in Uganda. Its dedication to the protection of birds and their habitats has earned it a well-deserved reputation as a leading conservation organization in the country. With its membership-based approach and strong partnerships, NU is well-positioned to continue its vital work in the years to come.
