Nyandarua High School has been a prominent institution in Nyandarua County since its inception. With a rich history and a commitment to providing quality education, this mixed boarding school has played a vital role in shaping the minds of young learners. In this review article, we will delve into the school’s journey, milestones, and the opportunities it offers to its students.Nyandarua High School was established on 29th March 1965, at a time when Kenya was thirsting for secondary and university education, immediately after gaining independence. It opened its doors with a modest intake of 71 students, who began their educational journey in a house located just below Rurii Shopping Centre, near the main road.Over the years, Nyandarua High School has undergone significant growth. Today, it stands on a vast 54-acre campus, accommodating a thriving student population of over 767 students. This expansion has allowed the school to provide a conducive learning environment that promotes holistic development and academic excellence.   Throughout its history, Nyandarua High School has achieved several notable milestones, solidifying its position as a leading educational institution in the region. In 1967, recognizing the importance of girls’ education, a dedicated girls’ stream was established. Due to space constraints, the girls were temporarily relocated to Karogo-ini, until adequate facilities were available on the main campus.Another significant development occurred in 1968 when the International Development Agency (I D A) initiated a massive construction project on the current school site. This endeavor marked the beginning of a transformative era for Nyandarua High School.In subsequent years, the school witnessed various advancements.In 1970, an ‘A’ level science class was introduced, providing students with an opportunity to explore scientific disciplines further. Additionally, the installation of a water borehole and a single-phase electricity supply in 1974 brought essential amenities to the campus, significantly improving the learning environment.   Nyandarua High School continually adapted to the evolving educational landscape. In 1978, a new ‘A’ level arts class was introduced, complementing the existing science program. As a result, the school expanded to triple streams from Form 1 to 6, catering to the diverse interests and aptitudes of its students.In 1989, as the education system transitioned to the 8-4-4 system, Nyandarua High School witnessed a significant transformation. The first batch of students under the new system sat for their K.C.S.E. Examination, marking a new chapter in the school’s history.Nyandarua High School has always prioritized the well-being of its students. The dedication of the Nyandarua School Old Students Association (NSOSA) during the school’s Silver Jubilee Celebration in 1990 stands as a testament to this commitment. NSOSA generously donated a library block, aptly named the ‘HEART’ of the school, to accommodate an impressive collection of 60,000 volumes of books.   This initiative, supported by enthusiastic parents and the wider community, showcases the collective effort to enhance the educational resources available to students.
