Nyenga Mission Hospital, also known as St. Francis Hospital Nyenga, is a non-profit community hospital located in the town of Nyenga in Buikwe District, Uganda. The hospital is owned and operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lugazi, and has been serving the local community for over 80 years.Founded in 1932 as a leprosy treatment hospital by Mother Kevin, a nurse who was also a nun of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa, the hospital has since expanded its services to treat other diseases. Today, Nyenga Hospital serves Buikwe District and people from parts of the neighboring districts of Kayunga, Jinja, Buvuma, and Mukono.In addition to providing medical care, Nyenga Hospital is also the teaching hospital for the St. Francis Nyenga School of Nursing. This allows the hospital to not only treat patients, but also train the next generation of healthcare professionals.Despite facing challenges of under-staffing and vandalism in the past, Nyenga Mission Hospital continues to provide crucial healthcare services to the local community. As of December 2019, the hospital attended to an average of 20,102 outpatients annually, with inpatient admissions averaging 4,089 annually. Maternity deliveries also averaged 404 annually, with a caesarian section rate of 37.7 percent.Nyenga Mission Hospital is a shining example of a community hospital that has made a significant impact in a rural area.
