Description

Rift Valley Academy.

Established in 1906, Rift Valley Academy (RVA) in Kenya has been a beacon of educational excellence for over a century. From its humble beginnings to its present status as a renowned institution, RVA has continuously evolved, providing a nurturing environment for students from various parts of the world. The school’s founder, Charles Hurlburt, faced a difficult decision regarding his children’s education. Rather than sending them to England, he chose to keep them close and enlisted the help of missionary Josephine Hope to teach them in Kenya. With plans for dormitories and classrooms, RVA started taking shape. In 1909, the main building, Kiambogo, was laid with the cornerstone by President Teddy Roosevelt himself, symbolizing the school’s commitment to education. The early years were challenging, with difficulties in recruiting staff compounded by the disruptions caused by World War I and later World War II. However, RVA persevered under the leadership of Herb and Mildred Downing, who tirelessly sought teachers and funding. They recognized the vital role the school played in enabling parents to remain in the mission field. RVA’s dedication paid off, and in 1950, the school celebrated its first graduating class.Kenya’s independence in 1963 marked a turning point for RVA. With the influx of missionaries and a renewed focus on education, the school experienced unprecedented growth. Athletic, music, and drama programs were established, fostering a spirit of holistic development. In 1967, under the leadership of Roy Entwistle, RVA became the first school in Africa to receive American accreditation, solidifying its reputation for academic excellence. Throughout the following decades, RVA continued to expand its enrollment and facilities, while prioritizing the well-being of its students. The school gained national recognition in both the arts and athletics, and its academic prowess garnered international acclaim. Today, RVA proudly educates approximately 500 students from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe.RVA’s commitment to spiritual vibrancy and academic excellence remains unwavering. The faculty and staff strive to create a supportive environment where students can thrive intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. The school’s rich history and dedication to holistic education make it an exceptional choice for parents seeking an exceptional educational experience for their children.
