Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is a wildlife haven that boasts of diverse and awe-inspiring flora and fauna. This protected area is a combination of the former Saba Game Reserve and the Rungwa Game Reserve, which was elevated to full park status in 1964. Today, it covers a staggering 20,226 km2 (7,809 sq mi), making it the largest national park in Tanzania.The park is approximately 130 kilometres (81 mi) west of Iringa and is part of the Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi ecosystem, which spans 45,000 square kilometres (17,000 sq mi) and includes the Kizigo and Muhesi Game Reserves, the Rungwa Game Reserve, and the Mbomipa Wildlife Management Area. Visitors can reach the park via a dirt road from Iringa, or by air using the Msembe airstrip at Msembe (park headquarters) or the Jongomeru Airstrip, near the Jongomeru Ranger Post.Ruaha National Park is named after the Great Ruaha River, which meanders along its southeastern boundary, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience wildlife at its best. Here, you will find an array of animals such as the East African cheetah, East African lion, African leopard, wild dog, spotted hyena, giraffe, hippopotamus, African buffalo, and sable antelope, among others. Additionally, the park is home to over 571 bird species, both resident and migratory, with the hornbills being the most prominent.Despite its incredible diversity, Ruaha National Park has faced a few challenges in recent years. For instance, its elephant population declined drastically from 34,000 in the Ruaha-Rungwa ecosystem in 2009 to just 15,836 in 2015. In February 2018, six lions and 74 vultures were found dead, suspected to have been poisoned.In conclusion, Ruaha National Park is a gem that should be on every wildlife enthusiast’s bucket list.
