Ruma National Park

Ruma National Park is an extraordinary gem located in the Nyanza Province of Kenya, serving as a haven for the rare roan antelope, which is on the brink of extinction. This park is the only terrestrial park in the region and was established in 1966 as Lambwe Valley Game Reserve. In later years, it was renamed “Ruma,” in honor of the most feared Gor Mahia, a powerful wizard who lived in the park. The park is situated in the vast Lambwe Valley, making it an ideal destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.The park boasts of a vast array of game species, with over 400 species of birds, making it an Important Bird Area. Wildlife species include the eastern black rhinoceros, African leopards, Rothschild’s giraffes, cape buffalos, Lelwel hartebeests, olive baboons, and vervet monkeys. Other game species include hyenas, topis, honey badgers, oribis, bushpigs, and Bohor reedbucks, among others.The park’s most significant attraction is the rare roan antelope, and it is the only park in Kenya that protects the indigenous population of this species. At present, the population is small, with approximately 40 individual populations remaining. However, efforts are underway to ensure the survival of this magnificent species.Visitors to the park can access it through two gates, the Kamato Gate, and the Nyatoto Gate.
