St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor

St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor is a hospital that has served as a beacon of hope in Northern Uganda since its founding in 1959. Located in Obiya West Village, Bardege Division, Gulu City, Gulu District, Acholi sub-region, Northern Uganda, the hospital has grown from a 30-bed hospital to a facility with 483 beds. It is one of the best hospitals in East Africa and serves a significant percentage of the population of the city of Gulu and Gulu District.The hospital is administered and managed by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Gulu and was founded by Comboni Missionaries. St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor is not just a general hospital, but also serves as a referral hospital for many smaller hospitals in the region and less well-equipped hospitals in the country.St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor is one of two teaching hospitals for Gulu University School of Medicine, with the other being Gulu Regional Referral Hospital. The hospital also includes a nursing school and other health worker training programs. It maintains remote Level III Health Centers in Amuru, Opit, and Pabbo with an additional 24 beds.Despite facing numerous challenges throughout its history, such as being caught in the crossfire during the tyrannical reign of Idi Amin, St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor has remained a beacon of hope in Northern Uganda. It has also played a significant role in containing disease outbreaks, such as the 2000 Ebola outbreak, and providing medical care during times of conflict.Each day, the hospital hosts an average of 600 inpatients and their attendants, as well as 500 outpatients, for a daily total of about 2,000 individuals. During the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency, between 2,000 and 10,000 women and children would crowd into the hospital compound every night to avoid night-time attacks and abductions.St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor has a rich history and continues to provide high-quality medical care to the people of Northern Uganda. Its dedication to serving the community is a testament to the hospital’s mission and vision.
