Starehe Boys’ Centre and School.

Located in East Africa, Starehe Boys’ Centre and School has been a beacon of hope and empowerment for disadvantaged boys since its establishment in 1959. Over the years, it has evolved into a renowned educational institution that combines academic excellence with character development. This review delves into the rich history and transformative impact of Starehe Boys’ Centre and School. At its inception, Starehe faced numerous challenges amidst a politically tumultuous time in Kenya. However, driven by a profound vision, the founders erected two humble huts to provide shelter and education to young boys rescued from the streets. Despite skepticism from authorities and local communities, the center officially opened its doors on November 14, 1959, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey. From its earliest days, Starehe focused on primary education and simple trade training. However, it took four years to obtain legal recognition as a school and gain permission to enter its pupils for recognized examinations. This period also witnessed the initiation of efforts to secure international support. The Save the Children Fund of Britain became a pivotal overseas supporter, encouraging counterparts in other countries to contribute. Through partnerships with trusts, foundations, charitable bodies, technical assistance agencies, and volunteer organizations, Starehe strengthened its teaching staff and received financial assistance from private individuals, schools, and societies that generously sponsored specific boys. As Starehe continued to grow, it garnered the attention and support of prominent Kenyans. The Ministry of Education demonstrated increasing encouragement and backing for the institution. Recognizing the importance of integration, Starehe extended its reach beyond urban areas and embraced disadvantaged boys from rural communities.By reserving two-thirds of its places for the poor and helpless, while allowing fee-paying students to occupy the remaining third, Starehe fostered an environment of inclusivity. This approach ensured that the underprivileged boys had the opportunity to live, learn, work, and play alongside their counterparts from more fortunate backgrounds. The number of boys under Starehe’s care has steadily increased, currently standing at nearly eleven hundred. Such growth is a testament to the positive impact the institution has made in transforming the lives of countless young individuals. Starehe’s motto, “Natulenge Juu” (Let Us Aim High), bestowed by Kenya’s First President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, encapsulates the institution’s ethos. Beyond providing basic necessities, Starehe instills self-confidence and self-respect in its students, helping them overcome past misfortunes and equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in today’s competitive world. Over the years, Starehe Boys’ Centre and School has garnered international acclaim, attracting visits from distinguished individuals. Kenya’s Presidents, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Mr. Daniel Arap Moi, and His Excellency the Hon. Mwai Kibaki, have all recognized the transformative work carried out by Starehe. Notable figures such as HRH the Princess Royal, the late Mrs. Indira Gandhi, and Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands have also graced the institution with their presence. Furthermore, Starehe has hosted influential personalities including the late Senator Robert Kennedy, T.R.H. Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex, HRH the Duke of Gloucester, as well as legendary sportsmen like Pele and Muhammad Ali.Starehe Boys’ Centre and School features twelve boarding houses, each named after significant supporters and prominent figures in Kenyan history. These boarding houses provide a nurturing environment where students receive holistic education, fostering personal growth and camaraderie among peers.
