Description

Statehouse Girls High School.

With a rich history that dates back to its origins as a European hospital, Statehouse Girls High School has evolved into one of Kenya’s premier schools, providing a nurturing environment for girls to thrive academically, socially, and personally. The school’s journey began in January 1954 when the hospital, which occupied the present main administration block, made way for the establishment of the New Girls’ Secondary School. As the hospital transitioned to become the renowned Nairobi Hospital, the school took shape alongside it. However, it wasn’t until the end of 1955 that the school underwent a significant transformation. In a groundbreaking move, the student body, along with the headmistress and essential equipment, relocated to Eldoret, where Highland School (now known as Moi Girls’ School) was established. Meanwhile, back in Nairobi, the newly reformed student body, comprising both boys and girls, inaugurated Delamere High School in 1956. The school proudly bore the name of Lord Delamere, an influential European settler in Kenya.Over the next decade, Delamere Girls’ School flourished, fostering a reputation for excellence in education. However, in 1967, the school underwent a name change, becoming State House Road Girls’ High School, and eventually shedding the word “Road” to become the State House Girls High School we know today. Throughout its history, the school has witnessed significant milestones in diversity and inclusivity. In 1961, the administration transitioned to a Board of Governors, and in 1962, the school welcomed its first two Asian girls, Parviz Shirin Manji and Gwaderi Shamshad. Tragically, Parviz passed away a year later, but Gwaderi completed her O-levels before pursuing further studies in England. The entrance of African girls in 1964 marked another turning point for the school. Jessica Ngoya, daughter of Mr. H.W. Ngoya, the Webuye division educational officer, and Wamaitha Margaret Philomena, joined the ranks of State House Girls High School. Jessica’s exceptional leadership skills led her to become the school’s first African prefect in 1965 and eventually its first African head girl in June 1966. She later went on to become a respected lecturer at the University of Addis Ababa. The school’s commitment to fostering a diverse community continued to grow. In 2011, State House Girls High School welcomed its first Chinese student, Tian Ao Zhong, from Boye Middle School in Hebei province. Moreover, African and Asian teachers gradually joined the staff, reflecting Kenya’s multicultural landscape and the school’s dedication to promoting cultural exchange and understanding. While nurturing young minds is at the core of State House Girls High School’s mission, the institution has also made remarkable strides in developing its physical infrastructure. Thanks to the visionary sponsorship of His Excellency, the former President of Kenya, Hon. Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, the school saw the construction of its first boarding block in 1983-84. This initiative embodied the spirit of Harambee, a collective effort that has played a significant role in Kenya’s progress. Subsequently, a second boarding block was added in 2004 to commemorate the school’s Golden Jubilee. State House Girls High School boasts a range of exceptional facilities, including a state-of-the-art swimming pool inaugurated in 1968, a spacious school hall and kitchen unveiled by Miss Margaret Kenyatta in 1964, and well-equipped laboratories for sciences, home science, and computers. The school’s commitment to providing a comprehensive education is further exemplified by its modern library, established in 2004.Today, State House Girls High School continues to evolve, driven by a dedication to educational excellence and a growing demand for quality education. As the school moves towards expanding to a seven-streamed institution, it remains steadfast in offering a broad and expansive curriculum that prepares its students for the competitive world that lies ahead. State House Girls High School: A place where history, diversity, and academic prowess converge to shape the leaders of tomorrow.
