Strathmore University: An Oasis of Academic Excellence in Nairobi

Strathmore University is a leading chartered university located in the bustling city of Nairobi, Kenya. Founded in 1961, the university has a rich history of offering advanced-level education to students from different races and religions. The university is a Catholic institution, inspired and encouraged by Saint Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei.One of the university’s most notable programs is accounting, with an impressive 60% of the CPA finalists in Kenya hailing from Strathmore University in the past decade. Professor John Odhiambo serves as the current vice-chancellor of the university.The university’s journey began in 1966, when the first intake of Accountancy students joined the Sixth-form students and began preparing for the examinations of the UK-based Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). The college was unique at the time as a fully integrated post-Form 4 institution offering both academic and professional courses.In response to a request by the trustees in 1986, the government of Kenya donated 5 acres of land to Strathmore University on Ole Sangale Road, Madaraka Estate. The donors, the European Union (EU) and the Italian government, wanted to support a co-educational college that would offer courses in Management and Accountancy. Derrick Mureithi agreed to run their professional courses in the new Madaraka campus.Construction of the new campus began in September 1989, and the college merged with Kianda College in January 1993. In August 2002, the Commission of Higher Education awarded Strathmore University a Letter of Interim Authority to operate as a university with a Faculty of Commerce and a Faculty of Information Technology. In 2008, Strathmore University was awarded a charter to become a fully-fledged university.Strathmore University has since established Strathmore Business School, with academic linkage to various top business schools, including IESE and Harvard Business School.
