Fighting the Stigma and Saving Lives!

Sickle Cell disease is a neglected disease that affects many people in Uganda, regardless of their religious beliefs, tribe, community or social class. The disease contributes to a significant portion of child mortality rates in the country, and it is estimated that 80% of those born with the disease die before their 5th birthday.It is a tragedy that affects not only the person with the disease but their entire family who are stigmatized by society.The Uganda Sickle Cell Rescue Foundation (USCRF) was founded in 2013 as an effort to support sickle cell awareness and improve the quality of life for those living with the disease.The Mulumba family, a Ugandan couple living in the USA, Dr. Bulaimu Muwanga Kibirige of BMK group, Mr. Nsubuga Erostus of AGT Group, and Dr. Sikander Lalani of Roofings Group came together to establish this non-governmental organization (NGO) to address this neglected disease.USCRF also has a technical team of experts on its Board of Directors that include Prof. Christopher Ndugwa, an international sickle cell expert, Dr. Lawrence Kaggwa, a senior consultant surgeon, and Sister Annet Namirembe, the matron of Nsambya Hospital.USCRF is dedicated to raising awareness about sickle cell disease and providing support to those affected by it. The organization also works towards reducing the stigma associated with sickle cell disease in Uganda.Families who have children with the disease often hide them from society because of the fear of being labeled cursed and shunned from social functions. USCRF seeks to address this burden and make sure that families do not have to face this alone.Through its work, USCRF has been able to improve the lives of people with sickle cell disease in Uganda. It has also raised awareness about the disease and the importance of early diagnosis, which can save lives.USCRF is a shining example of how a group of dedicated individuals can make a difference in the lives of people affected by neglected diseases.
