Umma University

Umma University is a pioneering Islamic institution of higher education in Kenya, dedicated to offering certificate, diploma, degree and postgraduate studies. With its main campus located in Kajiado County, Umma University has been committed to providing quality education since its founding in 1997. Established as Thika College for Sharia and Islamic Studies in 1998, Umma University has a rich history of dedication to excellence. Registered under the Ministry of Education in 2001, Umma University was subsequently authorized to offer Diploma programmes in Islamic Sharia and Islamic Studies. In 2007, the college applied for validation of its programmes in Islamic Sharia and Studies, which was granted by the Commission for Higher Education. This paved the way for the college to collaborate with the International University of Africa, Khartoum, Sudan to offer two degree programmes – Bachelors of Arts in Islamic Sharia and Bachelor of Arts in Islamic Studies. With the experience gained from offering these two programmes, the sponsor felt that it was the right time to establish a university. In 2013, Umma University was awarded a Letter of Interim Authority and, in October 2019, was awarded a charter by President Uhuru Kenyatta after meeting the Ministry of Education requirements. The university was also presented with the mace, logo, seal and two volumes of accreditation reports at a ceremony held in State House, Mombasa. Today, Umma University is fully established and offers a wide range of approved, quality and diverse programmes aimed at contributing to national development. The institution offers additional courses in Computer Science, Business Management, Information Technology, Nursing and Islamic Banking and Finance. It also offers two postgraduate programmes namely Master of Business Administration and Master’s degree in Islamic studies. With plans to roll out several postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in the near future, Umma University is committed to providing its students with the best education and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
