University of Embu

The University of Embu, a Kenyan chartered university, has made impressive strides since its transition from a constituent college to a full-fledged university in 2016. Located in Embu, Kenya, along the Meru-Nairobi Highway, the institution sits just four kilometers away from Embu town at Kangaru ward in Manyatta constituency, Embu West.

The university has a rich history, dating back to 1947 when it was established as an agricultural training school for pre-service training at certificate level to Kenya African Preliminary Examination (KAPE) students. Over the years, it has undergone several transformations and name changes to become what it is today. In 1990, it was upgraded to an Agricultural Staff Training College to offer research and consultancy services to enhance performance in the agricultural sector. It later became the Embu Institute of Agriculture in 1968 before finally becoming the Embu Agricultural Staff Training (East) College in 2011.

On October 7, 2016, the University of Embu was awarded a charter by H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta at a function held at the State house in Nairobi, signaling the institution’s official recognition as a full university. This milestone achievement was followed by the appointment of Prof. Musili Wambua as the first Chancellor of the New University of Embu by the same president.

Today, the University of Embu offers a diverse range of courses, including biochemistry, microbiology and biotechnology, law, industrial chemistry, analytical chemistry, animal science and veterinary studies, library and information science, computer engineering, and education courses.

The University of Embu has set itself apart from its peers by delivering exceptional academic and research outcomes, as reflected in its recent ranking as the top-performing university in Kenya by the Ministry of Public Service and Gender. With a composite score of 2.1250, the institution beat out other state corporations and tertiary institutions to claim the top spot.
