Vanessa Grant Trust (VGT) stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity for children with special needs. Founded in 1998 by Hamish Grant in memory of his beloved late wife, Vanessa, the trust has tirelessly worked towards revitalizing the education system and uplifting the lives of these remarkable children. With its inspiring origins and unwavering commitment, the Vanessa Grant School has become a testament to the power of compassion and inclusivity.The roots of the Vanessa Grant School can be traced back to 1912 when Hamish Grant’s grandfather settled in Gogar Farm, Rongai. It was here, in 1946, that Gogar Farm established a primary school for the children of its employees. Over the years, the school flourished, eventually becoming the primary school for Rongai in 1963 under the administration of the Kenyan government. Recognizing the need to extend educational opportunities to children with physical disabilities, Emily Dudgeon, Hamish’s aunt, initiated a small school for this purpose. The school was later relocated to Menengai, and it was during this time that Naomi Ndungu, the founding Head of the Vanessa Grant School, began a unit specifically catering to mentally handicapped children. With unwavering determination, Naomi transformed an abandoned building within Gogar Primary School into a sanctuary for these special children.In 1997, tragedy struck when Vanessa Grant passed away. Inspired by his wife’s unwavering passion for education and the welfare of children, Hamish founded the Vanessa Grant Trust the following year to honor her memory. This marked the beginning of a remarkable journey that would transform the lives of countless children with special needs. The Vanessa Grant School officially opened its doors on June 28th, 2001, made possible through generous contributions from friends and the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development. The trust worked tirelessly to ensure the school met the standards of a “sponsored public school” under the Kenyan Ministry of Education. The Teachers’ Services Commission appoints qualified teachers, and the school adheres to the regulations set forth by the Ministry of Education, overseen by a dedicated Board of Management.While the Kenyan government provides funding for staff salaries and some operational expenses, the Vanessa Grant Trust actively engages in fundraising initiatives to cover the remaining costs. These efforts include vital resources for boarding facilities and other educational necessities. With incredible support from organizations in England, Australia, and the United States, the trust has successfully raised over US$2.2 million, facilitating the establishment of new schools and educational projects within the Rongai area. The impact of the Vanessa Grant School extends far beyond its campus walls. It serves as a catalyst for change, empowering children with special needs to discover their potential, develop essential life skills, and actively participate in society. Through inclusive education and tailored support, the school nurtures the unique abilities of each student, fostering independence, confidence, and a sense of belonging.
