Watamu Marine National Park

Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve is a true gem in the heart of Kenya’s coastal region. This marine park was established back in 1968, making it one of Kenya’s first marine parks. Situated approximately 90 miles (140 km) north of Mombasa, this park is one of the most popular attractions for tourists visiting the region. One of the most remarkable features of Watamu Marine National Park is its coral gardens. These gardens, located just 300 metres (980 ft) from the shore, are home to an impressive array of marine life, including approximately 600 species of fish, 110 species of stony coral, and countless invertebrates, crustaceans, and mollusks. The water temperature in the park ranges from 20 degrees Celsius (June to November) to 30 degrees Celsius (December to May).In recognition of its exceptional beauty and biodiversity, Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve was designated as a biosphere reserve in 1979. The park’s coral reefs form the backbone of the area, providing abundant nutrients for fish. With over 150 species of hard and soft corals, such as brain corals, fan corals, and sponges, visitors can witness an amazing underwater world that is unparalleled. The park has a rich variety of marine life, including whale sharks, manta rays, octopus, barracuda, and many other species of fish. Additionally, Watamu has a thriving turtle population, with the green, hawksbill, and olive ridley turtle species all nesting here. A turtle watch program has been implemented to ensure the survival of these endangered sea turtles, making Watamu Marine National Park a critical nesting site for these species.Despite the park’s beauty, it has not been without its challenges. In 1997-1998, bleaching of the water in the park caused high levels of mortality to the coral reefs in Malindi and Watamu, which resulted in slow recovery. The growth of tourism and agriculture in the area also contributed to the degradation of the marine environment. However, the park has been working to address these issues and implement measures to protect the area’s delicate ecosystem, including incorporating land-use plans into the management plan.Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve is a true paradise for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Visitors can experience the thrill of swimming with whale sharks, exploring the beautiful coral gardens, and observing the nesting habits of endangered sea turtles. With its unique combination of breathtaking beauty and rich biodiversity, Watamu Marine National Park is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Kenya’s coastal region.
