Located just 6 kilometers southwest of the town of Entebbe, on the northern shores of Lake Victoria, Entebbe International Airport is approximately 40 kilometers by road southwest of the central business district of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. With a rich history dating back to the British colonial era, the airport is one of the busiest and most important airports in East Africa, serving millions of passengers every year.Entebbe International Airport offers a wide range of facilities and services to passengers, including duty-free shopping, restaurants, lounges, and currency exchange. The airport has two terminals – Terminal 1 for international flights and Terminal 2 for domestic flights. The main terminal building, designed by Yugoslav Montenegrin architect Aleksandar Keković and built by Energoprojekt holding in the 1970s, is a beautiful example of modernist architecture and features stunning views of Lake Victoria.The airport has a rich history, having played a pivotal role in the rescue of hostages during the famous Operation Entebbe in 1976. Today, the airport is a hub for many airlines, including Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines, connecting Uganda to the rest of the world.Entebbe International Airport is currently undergoing a massive modernization project aimed at improving the airport’s facilities and increasing its capacity. The first phase of the project, which began in 2015 and is expected to end in 2022, includes the relocation and expansion of the cargo terminal, the construction of a new passenger terminal building, and the modernization and improvement of the existing passenger terminal building. The second phase of the project, expected to begin in 2023 and end in 2026, will involve the relocation and expansion of fuel storage facilities, while the third phase, expected to begin after 2026, will include the building of a new multi-story car park, a new control tower, and the expansion of departure and arrival lounges.Entebbe International Airport is a vital asset for Uganda’s economy, connecting the country to the rest of the world and facilitating trade and tourism.
