King’s College Budo

King’s College Budo is a prestigious secondary school located on the scenic Naggalabi Hill in southern Wakiso District, Central Uganda. Established in 1906, the school has a rich history as one of the oldest educational institutions in Uganda.The founder, George Wilson, in conjunction with the Church Missionary Society, created the school as a boys-only institution for the sons of kings and chiefs. However, in 1934, King’s College Budo became a mixed-sex education school when girls were admitted.The Kabaka of Buganda generously donated the land on which the school was built, and over the years, it has received tremendous support from the Monkton Combe School in England. In fact, the Monkton Combe scholarships at King’s College were founded using money donated during the service of thanksgiving for Monkton Combe School’s centenary held at St Paul’s Cathedral in London in May 1968.Despite its illustrious history, King’s College Budo has faced its fair share of challenges. In 1979, the school had to be evacuated due to the Uganda-Tanzania War, and the Libyan Armed Forces, who were allied with the Uganda Army at the time, took over the facility.However, the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) and Ugandan rebels attacked and overran the camp as part of Operation Dada Idi, resulting in the death of about two dozen Libyans who were buried in a nearby mass grave. The TPDF subsequently used King’s College Budo as a base, and when the school reopened in June 1979, the students coexisted with the Tanzanian soldiers until they withdrew from Uganda.Despite these challenges, King’s College Budo remains a top-tier educational institution that has produced some of the brightest minds in Uganda. With its picturesque location and rich history, King’s College Budo is a school that every student would be proud to attend.
