Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital

Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, located in the heart of Mbarara City, is the primary referral hospital for the Western Region of Uganda. It serves as a teaching hospital for the Mbarara University of Science and Technology and is affiliated with the Bishop Stuart University Nursing School. The hospital was founded by the Uganda Ministry of Health and offers free general care to the public.The hospital has a bed capacity of 600, but due to the high demand for medical services, many more patients are admitted, with some sleeping on the floors. The hospital staffs medical students and residents who provide quality medical care to the patients. Mbarara Hospital is also one of the 15 internship hospitals in Uganda, providing an opportunity for medical graduates to serve a one-year internship under the supervision of qualified specialists and consultants.Despite the challenges, Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital is a beacon of hope for the people of the Western Region. In 2011, the hospital underwent extensive renovation, rehabilitation, and expansion to transform it into a national referral hospital. The project was undertaken by the Excel Construction Company, a subsidiary of the Madhvani Group. The renovation increased the hospital’s bed capacity from 300 to 608, providing more space for patients.The Hospital’s strategic location makes it easily accessible to the people in the Western Region. The hospital is approximately 268 kilometers southwest of Mulago National Referral Hospital, the capital city’s primary hospital. The hospital’s geographical coordinates are 0°36’59.0″S, 30°39’32.0″E, making it a convenient location for patients seeking medical attention.
