Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park, located near Morogoro, Tanzania, is a captivating destination that will leave visitors in awe. Established in 1964, this 3,230 km2 (1,250 sq mi) park is the fourth largest in the country and is crossed by Tanzania’s A-7 highway. The park shares a border with the Selous Game Reserve, forming a unique ecosystem, while the Udzungwa Mountains and Uluguru Mountains also border the park. The park’s topography is a sight to behold, with Malundwe Mountain standing out as the highest point at an elevation of 1290 meters above sea level. The area north-west of the park, which is characterized by the alluvial plain of the river basin Mkata, is dotted with savannah and acacia trees, among others. The southeast of the park is less rich in wildlife, but it is equally captivating. The fauna in the park is diverse, with many species characteristic of the African savannah. The park boasts a subspecies of giraffe, which biologists consider the link between the Masai giraffe and the reticulated giraffe. Other animals in the park include elephants, zebras, impala, eland, kudu, black antelope, baboons, wildebeests, and buffaloes. Visitors can also enjoy sightings of hippos at the two artificial pools located about 5 km from the north of the park. The park is also home to over 400 different species of birds, which provide a bird-watching paradise.
